In this study, the researchers found that compared to MinION (Oxford Nanopore
Technologies) and NextSeq 500™ (Illumina) , the DNBSEQ-G99 sequencing platform generated more genomic data and offered the most comprehensive analysis for Chlamydia psittaci L99.1
Introduction
Chlamydia psittaci is a zoonotic intracellular pathogen that can cause a range of serious diseases, including asymptomatic transient carriage and pneumonia that can lead to multi-organ system failure. However, early diagnosis is confounded with nonspecific clinical manifestations and low index of suspicion for rare infections. Furthermore, limited diagnostic methods in most clinical laboratories constrain the diagnosis of psittacosis. In this study, a research team reported a case of lethal psittacosis which was diagnosed using metagenomic sequencing. The results indicate that both sample type and sequencing platform selection are critical in the elucidation of the etiology of severe pneumonia.2 The greatest advantage of metagenomic sequencing is the identification of unknown pathogens. Unknown genomes or transcriptomes from heterogenous samples can be compared with a comprehensive database to search for known microbes, and potentially identify previously undescribed disease-causing microorganisms. DNBSEQ-G99 sequencing platform is expected to outperform other platforms and to be the most ideal platform for metagenomic sequencing due to its high accuracy, flexibility, and speed.
