Dr. Clifford Reid
Dr. Clifford Reid, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Complete Genomics, has 25 years of
experience in startup and growth companies managing the commercialization of innovative, unstructured data
management technologies. In 1995, he was the founding chairman and chief executive officer of Eloquent,
Inc., a digital video communications company that he took public in 2000 (NASDAQ: ELOQ) and sold it in
2003. In 1988, he was the founding vice president of product development at Verity (NASDAQ: VRTY), an
enterprise text search engine company that was recently sold to Autonomy for $500M. Cliff earned a B.S.
in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), an M.B.A. from the Harvard Business
School and a Ph.D. in management science and engineering (MSE) from Stanford University.
John Curson
John Curson, chief financial officer of Complete Genomics Inc., has more than 25 years of
experience in senior financial management positions with both venture-funded startup's and with public
companies. John has extensive experience in public companies, and served as the chief financial officer
during the initial and secondary public offerings for Eloquent Inc., RasterOps Inc. and Truevision
Inc.; all of which are NASDAQ listed public companies in the high-tech arena. John also managed the successful
acquisitions of Eloquent and Truevision by public companies. Prior to his chief financial officer
positions, John was vice president of finance for DataProducts, the world’s largest publicly-traded
computer printer company at the time. John is a member of the Silicon Valley Bank CFO Advisory Board.
John earned an M.B.A. from the Anderson School of Business at the University of California, Los Angeles.
He also earned an M.A. in operations research and economics and a B.Eng. in mechanical engineering from
the University of Leeds, UK.
Dr. Radoje Drmanac
Dr. Radoje (Rade) Drmanac, chief scientific officer of Complete Genomics, is one of the leading research scientists
in the field of DNA sequencing-by-hybridization (SBH). In 1994, he co-founded Hyseq (now Nuvelo, NASDAQ: NUVO)
where, as chief scientific officer, he led the effort to discover and patent thousands of genes which now form
the basis of Nuvelo’s drug development pipeline. Prior to Hyseq, Rade was a group leader at Argonne National Labs
from 1991 to 1994 as part of the Department of Energy’s Human Genome Project. He completed his postdoctoral studies
in 1990 in Hans Lehrach’s group at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund in London. He earned his Ph.D. in molecular
biology for the conception and pioneering development of SBH technology from Belgrade University, where he also
received B.S. and M.S. degrees in molecular biology.
Dr. Dennis Ballinger
Dr. Dennis Ballinger, vice president of genomics at Complete Genomics, has more than 20 years of genetics research
experience in both academic and industrial settings covering model organism genetics, biology and biochemistry,
human genetics and functional genomics. He has extensive experience managing collaborations with biotech and
pharmaceutical companies as well as non-profit organizations. Most recently, he served as vice president of
genomics at Perlegen Sciences. Prior to Perlegen, Dennis served as director of cardiovascular disease research at
Myriad Genetics, senior director of functional genomics at Hyseq and director of software product development at
Ingenuity Systems. Prior to this work in biotechnology companies, he was an assistant professor at the
Sloan-Kettering Institute for five years. Dennis obtained a Ph.D. in cellular and developmental biology from the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) before completing his postdoctoral training at the California
Institute of Technology.
Dr. Bill Banyai
Dr. Bill Banyai, vice president of hardware at Complete Genomics, has 20 years of experience developing advanced
optical instruments. He was the founding chief technical officer of Glimmerglass Networks, an optical networking
company, and the chief technologist of Silicon Light Machines, a high-resolution display company (acquired by Cypress
Semiconductor). He served as a staff physicist at the Lawrence Livermore National Lab, a research engineer at Stanford
University’s Ginzton Laboratory and a research scientist at the Sandia National Lab’s Compound Semiconductor Research
Facility. He earned a B.S. in physics from the University of Michigan, an M.S. in electrical science from the University
of Michigan, an Engineer of Electrical Engineering from University of Southern California (USC), and a Ph.D. in optical
sciences from the University of Arizona.
Bruce Martin
Bruce Martin, vice president of software at Complete Genomics, has 20 years of experience designing and developing
ground-breaking software technologies. Most recently, he was vice president of product strategy at PSS Systems. He also
served as chief technical officer at Openwave (NASDAQ: OPWV). During his 10 years at OpenWave he led product management,
engineering and business unit teams, and he participated in the development of pioneering mobile software applications.
Earlier in his career, he was an engineering manager in the Java development group at Sun Microsystems (NASDAQ: SUNW)
and helped shape this major technology. He earned a B.S. in computer science and electrical engineering from the University
of California at Davis.
Dr. Alan Dow
Dr. Alan Dow, vice president of intellectual property and legal affairs at Complete Genomics, has extensive
experience developing and managing intellectual property portfolios and negotiating complex corporate transactions
in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors. Prior to joining Complete Genomics, he worked as an attorney in
private practice specializing in patent prosecution and intellectual property-related transactions. Alan also served
as vice president and general counsel at Vical Incorporated, and in other positions in law firms and corporations.
He earned a Ph.D. in genetics from Harvard University and a J.D. from Stanford Law School.
Jennifer Turcotte
Jennifer Turcotte, vice president of marketing at Complete Genomics, has more than 15 years of technology and biotechnology
marketing and product management experience with both venture-funded startups and public companies. Jennifer directs all
product management and marketing activities at Complete Genomics including product requirements, product marketing, market
entry strategy, communications, branding and public relations. She has held senior product marketing positions at SAP,
Siperian, Ariba and BEA. Jennifer earned a B.Eng. in mechanical engineering from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada.
Aaron Solomon
Aaron Solomon, vice president of business development at Complete Genomics, has more than 20 years of experience in sales, marketing and business development in the life sciences marketplace, including at companies such as Incyte, ParAllele and Affymetrix. At ParAllele, Aaron led sales and business development efforts for this venture-backed company which culminated in its acquisition by Affymetrix. At Affymetrix, Aaron was responsible for the Industrial Sales team where he developed programs for biomarker discovery and validation. Most recently, Aaron was Vice President of Business Development for Tethys Bioscience. He holds a B.S. in Biological Sciences from U.C. Irvine.
Mauro Folena
Mauro Folena, vice president of operations at Complete Genomics, has over 25 years of experience leading both semiconductor and medical device manufacturing teams. His strong background in Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies is being leveraged to achieve world class cycle times, quality, and competitive cost structures. Most recently he led advanced manufacturing at Proteus Biomedical. Prior to Proteus, Mauro served as director of operations at Coherent (Nasdaq: COHR), vice president of operations at Aerogen (acquired by Nektar Therapeutics), and held leadership positions at Honeywell International (NYSE: HON), and National Semiconductor (NYSE: NSM). He earned a B.S. in Information Systems Management from the University of San Francisco.
