• In depth analysis of genomes that fail routine QC checks to determine the root cause of the anomaly, and quantify the effect and impact on the utility of the genome assembly
• Provide Yes/No decisions on shipping unusual genome assemblies
• Classify errors and apply known workarounds, 
• Advise the production lab on issues related to genome quality
• Working with software development on techniques to correct or classify problems and improve routine QC checks
• Work with customer support to provide explanations and auxiliary data related to unusual genome assemblies

Qualifications

• Graduate degree or 5+ years related industry experience
• Experience with genomics and bioinformatics.       
• Experience with Perl or Python in a bioinformatics context
• Excellent organizational skills, communication skills and attention to detail.

The Laboratory Director is responsible for the overall operation and administration of a high complexity genetic testing CLIA certified laboratory. Must be qualified to be a Laboratory Director by the State of California and meet the minimum CLIA requirements for high complexity testing.

Responsibilities

• Provides direction and coordination of the technical and administrative functions for the CLIA Laboratory.
• Ensure a Quality Management System (QMS) is developed and implemented, for all phases of testing, to include the pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic phases of testing as well as general laboratory systems.
• Ensure test systems have established acceptable performance specifications for the performance characteristics of accuracy, precision, analytical sensitivity, and analytical specificity of the system, to include performance, maintenance and calibration of instrumentation and equipment used to perform the testing.
• Ensure policies and procedures are established to monitor and assess, and when indicated, remedial and corrective actions are taken and documented when problems are identified with analytical test methods.
• Ensure an approved procedure manual is available to all personnel responsible for any aspect of the testing process.
• Ensure on-site supervision of high complexity test performance by testing personnel and qualified personnel perform delegated responsibilities.
• Ensure policies and procedures are established for hiring and monitoring individuals who conduct pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic phases of testing to assure they have the appropriate education and experience, are competent and maintain their competency to perform the testing procedures.
• Ensure the physical plant and laboratory environmental conditions are appropriate for the testing performed and provide a safe environment that protects employees from physical, chemical, and biological hazards and in compliance with all federal, state and local agencies.
• Ensure the laboratory has established an approved Proficiency Testing (PT) program to include an approved corrective action plan when any PT results are determined to be unacceptable.
• Ensure quality control and quality assessment programs have been established and maintained.
• Ensure test reports provide pertinent information required for interpretation and consultation is available to laboratory clients concerning reported test results.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

• Required Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
  The laboratory director must be currently licensed as a Laboratory Director by the State of California (BPC 1209) and meet the qualifications for Laboratory Director as specified by CLIA regulations for high complexity testing (42CFR, part 493).
• Certificate of Qualification in Molecular Genetics.

Preferred educational background:

• California licensed doctor of medicine or doctor of osteopathy. Certified in anatomic or clinical pathology by the American Board of
• Pathology or the American Osteopathic Board of Pathology, or at least one year of laboratory training during medical residency or at least two years of experience directing or supervising high complexity testing or hold a doctoral degree in chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science from an accredited institution and be certified and continue to be certified by a board approved by HHS.

Preferred experiential background:

• Experience in and oversight of CLIA / CAP Accredited Clinical Laboratories.
• Extensive knowledge of molecular biology and medical genetics preferred.

• Enrollment and participation in an HHS approved proficiency testing program commensurate with the services offered.
• Establishing a quality control program appropriate for the testing performed and establishing the parameters for acceptable levels of analytic performance and ensuring that these levels are maintained throughout the entire testing process from the initial receipt of the specimen, through sample analysis and reporting of test results.
• Resolving technical problems and ensuring that remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
• Ensuring that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is functioning properly.

• Evaluating the competency of all testing personnel and assuring that the staff maintain their competency to perform test procedures and report test results promptly, accurately and proficiently. The procedures for evaluation of the competency of the staff must include, but are not limited to
  • Direct observations of routine patient test performance, including patient preparation, if applicable, specimen handling, processing and testing.
  • Monitoring the recording and reporting of test results.
  • Review of intermediate test results or worksheets, quality control records, proficiency testing results, and preventive maintenance records.
  • Direct observation of performance of instrument maintenance and function checks.
  • Assessment of test performance through testing previously analyzed specimens, internal blind testing samples or external proficiency testing samples.
  • Assessment of problem solving skills.
• Evaluating and documenting the performance of individuals responsible for high complexity testing at least semiannually during the first year the individual tests patient specimens. Thereafter, evaluations must be performed at least annually unless test methodology or instrumentation changes, in which case, prior to reporting patient test results.  The individual's performance must be reevaluated to include the use of the new test methodology or instrumentation.

 Qualifications

The technical supervisor must possess an active, valid, license issued by the state to perform high complexity testing pursuant to chapter 3 of Business and Professions Code or to practice medicine, osteopathy or podiatry, pursuant to chapter 5 of Business and Professions Code appropriate to the specialty or specialties for which they are consulting and, for the specialties of diagnostic immunology, chemistry, hematology, and microbiology, must--

(1)   Have earned a bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical or biological science or medical technology from an accredited institution; and (may)

(2)   Have at least 4 years of laboratory training or experience, or both in high complexity testing for the specialty or subspecialty in which they supervise.

Qualifications

• BS/MS in Life Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry) and at least 5 years of directly related experience.
• Extensive molecular biology expertise including PCR, genotyping, sequencing, or microarray analysis.
• Familiarity with systems and processes used in molecular biology production environments, including use of SOPs and LIMS.
• Familiarity with high throughput production environments a strong plus.
• Experience in operating high-end analytical instrumentation.  Liquid handling automation experience a plus.
• Excellent analytical and organizational skills, with great attention to detail and record keeping in both written and electronic documentation.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for ensuring all requisite tasks are completed for a successful technology transfer from development to operations:
  • Creating, updating, reviewing, developing and executing standard operating procedures and supporting work instructions based in ISO 15189:2007, 13485:2007, FDA Quality System Regulations and CMS CLIA/CAP environments
  • Creating documentation including Manufacturing Process Instructions/Method Sheets, Bills of Material, Travelers, Instructions for Use/User Guides and Service Instructions
