Process Engineer (11-PD-102)

Responsibilities

The Process Engineer within the Process Engineering Group contributes to the development and implementation of workflows and automation systems and workflows to support the processing of samples in a human genome sequencing application.  This individual collaborates within a team of scientists and engineers upon projects to conceptualize, design, develop, and implement the automated systems designed to optimize the performance and increase the efficiencies of the laboratory processes.

Principal responsibilities of this position include automation projects leadership and direction, building rapport with end-users, lab supervisors and process owners, and coordinate with cross functional projects teams.  Supervise and lead the development and integration of the automation systems and related software tools, preparing the documentation for equipment validation and operating procedures, and ensure successful implementation in the labs.  Additional responsibilities include user training, troubleshooting, optimizing the workflows, and on-going support for the end-users.

Qualifications

A BS or MS degree in a related scientific or engineering field such as Molecular Biology, Process/Industrial Engineering, and Bio-Medical Engineering, with a minimum of eight to ten years of relevant experience.  Technical proficiency and experience in automation systems development and integration for the life science industry; especially with robotics and liquid handling systems is required.  Supervisory experience is a plus.  Strong project management skills, organizational skills, and written and verbal communication skills are required.  Flexibility and self-initiative required to support several simultaneous projects.  Ability to collaborate is required.  Preparing User Requirement and Testing Procedure, Standard Operating Procedures, and related documentations; and overseeing the functional and validation testing, IQ/OQ/PQ.  Biotech, pharmaceutical, Lab automation providers, or clinical-laboratory experience is highly desirable.

Senior/Principal Biochemical Process Engineer (11-PD-006)

Description

The Senior/Principal Biochemical Process Engineer is an experienced engineer and technology leader responsible for process design of biochemical processes involved in Complete Genomics human genome sequencing service, including end-to-end process design, workflow specification and optimization, overall system architecture, process integration, controls, integrity and monitoring.   The candidate will act as an architect and general contractor for service process design and must be able to create a unifying architecture linking information systems (LIMS/ERP), discrete manufacturing processes and high throughput automation.

Responsibilities

  • End-to-end biochemical process architecture, including system concepts & standards involved in our DNA sequencing services
  • Design and implementation of system-wide process integrity and quality controls
  • Leadership of process design teams for overall system and critical sub-systems.
  • Operational process & workflow design, with a focus on efficiency, integrity and quality of execution:
    • Materials handling & flow
    • IT system integration, scheduling & control systems and LIMS design
    • Automation architecture
    • Process performance, QC data gathering and monitoring
    • Human factors

Qualifications

  • Strong technical and scientific leadership skills in a matrixed and multi-disciplinary team.  
  • Comfortable leading teams without direct line management in an agile and fast paced environment.
  • Experience in high-throughput or high-scale laboratory environments, preferably including regulated environments such as CLIA, GMP, and IVD.
  • Must be able to efficiently evaluate, prioritize and manage multiple and changing priorities and projects. Ability to work under pressure with strict attention to deadlines and details.
  • Experience with agile/lean manufacturing, modern process design, statistical quality control, process automation, robotics and related topics
  • Experience with chemical processing; ideally, experience with biochemical processes
  • Experience with manufacturing execution systems (MES), operational controls systems (e.g. LIMS) and integrating robotics/automation with operational control systems
  • 12-15+ years of relevant work experience
  • MS or PhD relevant technical or scientific discipline.
