Summary:
Complete Genomics is looking for experienced bioinformatics scientists who will be responsible for supporting and collaborating with customers of our complete human genome sequencing service. As Complete Genomics’ customers are themselves academic and commercial researchers, the application scientists will have involvement in customer’s initial experimental designs, and in their understanding and leveraging of genome sequence data in their research. Complete Genomic’s application scientists are responsible for end-user training, data analysis support, pre-sales technical discussions, and participating in a variety of product definition, documentation, and launch projects, in collaboration with the marketing and R&D teams at CG.
This is a field-based position: the individual will be traveling to regional customer sites and events part of the time, and working from home the remainder: the individual is expected to have a productive home office environment established. The Travel required is likely to be ~30% of weekdays, although it will likely be higher at certain times and lower at others: occasionally longer trips will be required for conferences and to the company headquarters in California.
Complete genomics seeks field application scientists in the following regions: Boston, Southern California, Middle USA, and the European Continent. Customer Application Scientist positions may also available based out of the Mountain View, California company headquarters.
The ideal candidates will have:
- PhD or equivalent work experience in Bioinformatics, Genomics or Genetics with 5+ years of experience in large-scale sequencing
- Strong working knowledge of current results and trends in Genomics as can be learned from reading the literature, attending seminars or conferences, and scientific discussions. Specifically, a candidate should have an understanding of current methods and results from analyzing sequence and structural variation in both human genetics and in cancer genome biology. Candidates should have a good general knowledge of available next-gen sequencing technologies.
- Experience working in multidisciplinary environments and in particular with inside and outside groups on challenging scientific projects.
- Excellent customer interaction skills and experience with managing pre-and post-sales customer situations. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Hands-on skills with Linux/Unix, scripting languages, and experience with handling very large data sets. Good understanding of statistical methods as they apply to genomic and genome-wide genetic data. Strong familiarity with public sequence databases and with standard sequence analysis tools and methods.
Job responsibilities will include:
- Pre-sales technical and scientific discussions with customers on the potential uses of CGI-provided data in their particular area of research
- Pre-sales scientific presentations and other efforts to provide technical support to the CGI sales team
- Post-sales customer training
- Answering (by email, phone, and in person) both scientific and technical questions regarding CGI provided data (quality, scientific attributes, formats, semantics) as they may apply to the customer’s specific scientific goals
- For certain key customers and key demonstration projects, assisting and collaborating in various analyses of CGI data
- Interacting with and supporting local partners, such as those developing software for use with the Complete Genomics data
- Advising customers and strategic partners on the use of various software tools, workflows, and QC criteria for utilizing Complete Genomics data in for various scientific purposes
- Helping the Complete Genomics Mountain View team in authoring documentation, training and support materials.
- Assisting in the specifications, design, and testing of tools and product features
- Keeping abreast of community technical and scientific knowledge regarding the attributes of and approaches to using genomic sequence data.
- Writing-up detailed customer feedback for incorporation into product plans
- Contributing and implementing the territory business plan in collaboration with the local sales team
